Focal Point Gallery is a contemporary visual arts organisation based in South Essex at the ground floor of Southend’s Central Library, The Forum. Founded in 1990, the gallery promotes and commissions major solo exhibitions, group and thematic shows which reflect and respond to the unique context and heritage of Southend-on-Sea and the county of Essex.

The gallery has multiple outputs across the town including a year-round programme of high-quality exhibitions, events, publications, projects and temporary public artworks. Working with a diverse range of artists at all stages of their career, the gallery seeks to provide residents and visitors the opportunity to experience, participate and learn about challenging and ambitious examples of U.K. and international contemporary art.

As a key focus of our output, Focal Point Gallery’s learning programme aims to engage people of all ages in current debates around contemporary art, and looks to extend and develop new audiences. We consider the philosophies and working methods of the artists in our exhibitions programme as the starting point for inspiration, aspiration and discussion in the community. On this basis, the gallery seeks to proactively engage with a wide range of local community groups, schools, young people and children.

Focal Point Gallery

Focal Point Gallery is south Essex’s gallery for contemporary visual art, promoting and commissioning major solo exhibitions, group and thematic shows, a programme of events including performances, film screenings and talks, as well as offsite projects and temporary public artworks.

The organisation currently produces up to seven gallery exhibitions each year, in which artists and curators are given a platform to make new work in response to the gallery’s unique location on the ground floor of the town’s new library and learning facility, The Forum.

Focal Point GallerySolo exhibitions confirmed for 2016 include those by Frances Scott and Torsten Slama. To coincide with the move to the new gallery, a series of permanent commissions by Marc Camille Chaimowicz, Mike Nelson, Allen Ruppersberg and Tris Vonna-Michell were installed in 2013, and were supported by a capital project funded by Southend-on-Sea Borough Council and Arts Council England.

Each programme includes a series of educational activities by a range of artists, curators and writers, and aims to establish ongoing collaborations with international arts institutions, and engage with a wide range of local community groups, schools and children.

Focal Point Gallery receives regular funding from Arts Council England as one of the organisation’s national portfolio of funded organisations. The gallery also receives regular support from Southend Borough Council. The programme receives additional funding from other trusts and foundations and collaborates with partners including arts agencies and other organisations to co-produce projects.
