Art Gallery
The Museum houses the city’s temporary art gallery. Regularly changing exhibitions mean works of art from the museum’s varied collections can be put on public view.
Pictures on display reflect Chelmsford’s rich artistic heritage. Many works in the collection are by 20th century artists from Chelmsford and Mid Essex, including the Great Bardfield Artists which includes Michael Rothenstein, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and John Aldridge. Some of these also worked as illustrators and designers and the collection has work by their contemporary, Lynton Lamb, who lived near Chelmsford.
Also represented in the collection are works by John Nash, Campbell Archibald Mellon and Frederick Brown.
Pictures on display elsewhere in the Museum include:
- Philip Reinagle’s view of Chelmsford’s Shire Hall, painted for its architect John Johnson in 1794.
- A mid 19th century view of Chelmsford from Springfield Hill by Colkett records the new railway just before the expansion of the town.
Chelmsford’s landscape is also well covered. Works include watercolours and drawings by Alfred Bennett-Bamford, whose prolific late 19th and early 20th century sketches record many buildings and views now vanished.
