Art Gallery

Museum houses the city’s temporary art gallery. Regularly changing exhibitions mean works of art from the museum’s varied collections can be put on public view.

Pictures on display reflect Chelmsford’s rich artistic heritage. Many works in the collection are by 20th century artists from Chelmsford and Mid Essex, including the Great Bardfield Artists which includes Michael Rothenstein, Edward Bawden, Eric Ravilious and John Aldridge. Some of these also worked as illustrators and designers and the collection has work by their contemporary, Lynton Lamb, who lived near Chelmsford.
Also represented in the collection are works by John Nash, Campbell Archibald Mellon and Frederick Brown.
