Cuckoo Farm Studios

Cuckoo farm Studios was established in 1992 when a small group of artists moved in and began to turn this derelict farm into a suitable establishment for practicing professional artists to work from. Since then it has grown to house over 30 studios and prides itself on the professionalism of it’s artists and the reputation that they bring to the organisation. One of the many farm buildings was a pig shed until a few years ago when the artists received funding from the Hervey Benham Trust to turn it into a gallery. The Benham Gallery now hosts a full programme of exhibitions and residencies year after year, many of which are open to the public.

Cuckoo Farm StudiosIn the grounds of the farm is an annual contemporary Outside exhibition where artists come out of their studios to produce work specifically for the outside. This usually runs throughout the month of August and is open to the public at weekends. In September the artists open their studio doors to the public at the annual Open Studios weekend. This is an excellent opportunity to meet artists and designer makers in their workplace, see work in action or take the opportunity to purchase or commission work.
Cuckoo Farm Studios engages with local communities through workshops both at the studios and also in schools around Colchester and the wider region. Many artists are commissioned for public art projects where they work with developers, designers and communities regenerating specific areas of our region. There is also a Printworkshop on the site which is fully equipped and the members hold a variety of workshops where people learn many aspects and techniques of printmaking.
Cuckoo Farm Studios is a member of the National Federation of Studio Providers giving them access to a wide network of artist studios, information and procedures.

Old Bank Studios

Old Bank Studios, Harwich specialise in one day workshops in: Art, Textiles and Crafts.

Old Bank Studios concentrate on providing expert and professional tuition within this ambient setting. The glorious Edwardian banking hall accommodates an art studio, and a smaller textile studio.  Each workshop is complemented with home a cooked lunch and refreshments.

Old Bank StudiosBeverley and Nigel Caleno bought the Old Bank in Harwich two years ago.  “Having brought up and educated a family in Colchester, we were looking for a change of lifestyle and an opportunity to build on Bev’s Interior and Textile business.  We  fell in love with the magnificent building and unspoilt rustic charm of Harwich town.  We decided that the Hall would make a perfect studio to host artist’s workshops and would tap into the established and developing Harwich art scene”.

The Textile Studio opened in September 2012 and has been a great success, running courses and workshops.  The Art studio has been more of a challenge due to extensive renovations and alterations, but at long last in June this year we were able to commission our first artist, Geoff Thorpe, kicking off with the Arts Festival on 29th June 2013 (all courses can be booked on this website).  We are currently in the process of booking an exciting array of artists and tutors covering a variety of media and techniques

Hadleigh Old Fire Station

After extensive refurbishment by Essex County Council in association with Castle Point Regeneration Partnership and with funding from the Homes and Communities Agency, Hadleigh Old Fire Station is home to 15 artists and several local community groups. The light and spacious studios provide locally based artists much needed space to develop their practice and facilitate a range of arts activities based in the community. Community groups using the offices and hall facilities benefit from a central location in the town well-known to local people.

Hadleigh Old Fire StationThe ‘appliance hall’ – where fire engines were once kept – has been converted into a large, multi-use space which is available to hire for community activities, exhibitions and events. HOFS House, adjacent to the Fire Station, has also been converted for use as artist’ studios and groups working in the community.

Hadleigh Old Fire Station is an important stepping stone towards supporting and developing an arts and cultural community in Hadleigh for many years to come, as part of the regeneration plans for the town centre.

The Hive Artist Studios

Chelmsford has a habit of spawning artistic talent, and in the town that Grayson Perry grew up in, and was ‘inspired’ by, stands The Hive Artist Studios. Opened in September 2010 and set amongst quirky industrial units and corrugated iron sheds circa 1950 is a shared studio space, run by a dedicated group of established artists.

The HiveEach Hive Artist has been selected for their talent, originality, the standard of their artwork and the desire to forward their artistic practice. The diversity of artwork includes illustration, sculpture, community based projects, designer jewellery, photography, painting, printmaking, public art and much more. Bucking against the trend this small, unfunded, independent group of fourteen artists are creating, exhibiting and selling beautiful, original pieces of artwork. Workshops, one-to-one tutorials and studio open days are held through the year and visitors are welcome by prior appointment. In 2013 The Hive Artist Studios became a ‘Foundation Studio’, part of an Arts Council, Essex County Council and Firstsite scheme called The Essex Network of Artist Studios [ENAS]. This exciting new project links eight established Essex studios to create a wider, inspiring, creative community.
