The Minories Art Gallery

The Minories Galleries houses a contemporary art gallery run by Colchester School of Art. The site is also home to a shop selling some of the best art and crafts to be found across the region, has meeting rooms for hire, and can also cater for weddings and other events. A listed Georgian building, The Minories is of local importance within the historic town of Colchester.

The Victor Batte-Lay Foundation, over the years assisted by the ‘Friends of The Minories’ support group, have ensured the building be used to present art for the community of Colchester and visitors to the town. This has continued and now ensures the Colchester School of Art provides contemporary art and design in one of Colchester’s most distinctive buildings.

As well as the public gallery and shop, there is also the Batte-Lay Tea Rooms (run by Tiptree) and a wonderful walled garden that is looked after by The Friends of The Minories. The Minories is next door to Firstsite, Colchester’s new contemporary art space, in the centre of the town’s cultural quarter.
The Galleries are open Monday – Saturday 10.00am – 5.00pm.
Entry is Free.

Colchester School of Art we are proud to have a history dating from 1885, the year the original Art School was founded.
As well as being witness to the many great developments and upheavals of the twentieth century, the Art School has adapted to the increasing pace of change in contemporary art and design practice.
Today we strive to maintain the integrity of our courses, at the heart of which is a desire to develop concepts, designs and objects that will challenge and inspire. We believe in skill, traditional or otherwise, as a basis for understanding how ideas can exist.

The Fry Art Gallery

The Fry Art Gallery

The Fry Public Art Gallery was opened in 1987 and houses an impressive number of paintings, prints, illustrations, wallpapers and decorative designs by artists of the 20th century and the present day who have local connections and have made a significant contribution to their field. There is an emphasis on those who for a variety of reasons settled in Great Bardfield between the early thirties of the last century and the death in 1983 of John Aldridge RA who had lived in the village for fifty years.

Edward Bawden RA who, with his friend Eric Ravilious, discovered Bardfield a year before the arrival of Aldridge and dominated the scene for almost four decades, is represented by nearly 600 items. The Gallery has also acquired work by Ravilious and his wife Tirzah Garwood, and by those other artists who came to the village during the second world war – Michael Rothenstein RA, and his wife Duffy (now Duffy Ayers), Kenneth Rowntree, & George Chapman. The collection also includes prints and paintings by Bawden’s son Richard, and examples of the very varied work of artists who made their way to Bardfield in the 1950s – Marianne Straub, Audrey Cruddas, Sheila Robinson, Bernard Cheese and Walter Hoyle.

The Gallery was built in 1856 to house the collection of Francis Gibson, a local Quaker businessman, and the building passed by descent to the Fry family, from whom the Fry Art Gallery Society purchased it in 2015.

John Brandler
First, meet the man behind the name – John Brandler. John is the owner, founder and leading force behind this small, friendly business. He comes from a dealing background – his grandfather was an auctioneer. So it was no surprise that he started dealing in antique furniture whilst he was still at school.

Later, he purchased his first Carel Weight painting at a house sale. It was through Carel that he met other Royal Academicians, fell in love with the art world and has dealt in art ever since. Whilst in the early days he dealt from the back of a van, he has owned the Gallery for the last 24 years.

Gallery Open Saturday’s and Sunday’s 10am to 5pm or by appointment

Chappel GalleriesEdna Mirecka (Battye) opened Chappel Galleries on 16th May ’86. Later meeting Wladyslaw Mirecki, painter, it is one of the very few art galleries to claim a working artist as one of the proprietors. Set in the picturesque Colne Valley backing onto the River Colne it is an out of town gallery overlooking the romanesque 32 arch working Chappel Viaduct.

Drawn from the 20th & 21st century, Chappel Galleries sells work by professional artists, many with national reputations, also bringing to the attention of their public some who are younger or less well known. Contrary to current trends, they insist on showing artists who are grounded in the skill of painting, drawing and making of sculpture. They like to retain their identity by selling the work of artists from the region, including those who, although not living here, have regional connections.
